Please note that the initial teacher training sections of the website were originally funded by the Training and Development Agency for Schools (TDA). They have not been updated since March 2009 and the information provided in them by have been superseded.
There is no single pathway to becoming a teacher in the United States. Over 1,000 separate tertiary institutions prepare future teachers and no single entity governs the work or performance of any of these programmes. This decentralised system, while potentially allowing for flexibility and responsiveness to local needs, has become a focus of concern for policy makers who aim to strengthen teacher training.180
