The Swiss Conference of Cantonal Directors of Education has embarked on a ‘harmonisation’ project, which will define national standards for mathematics, languages and sciences for students in compulsory level education throughout Switzerland. Known as 'Project HarmoS', it has three distinct phases:

  • In the first phase, national standards are being developed for languages (mother tongue and foreign languages), mathematics and science.
  • In the second, levels of competence to be achieved at the end of Years 2, 6 and 9 are to be defined.
  • At the same time, standards will be developed for other subjects such as history and politics, geography, music, and sport. 45
