Glossary

arbetsplan work plan which every school has to devise; it is usually the headteacher who writes it. Each school's (local) work plan must specify how the goals are to be realised.
daghem day nursery, designed for children aged 1 to 6 years.
deltidsgrupp part-time group, for children aged 4 to 6 years.
familjedaghem registered childminders employed by the municipality to care for children in the minder's home, for children below school age.

pre-school institution providing pre-compulsory education (usually for the 0-5 age group in institutions such as day nurseries).
förskoleklass pre-school class for students aged 6-7, often provided in the grundskola.

compulsory phase school, mainly for students aged 7 to 16 years. (Since 1991, children have been permitted to complete compulsory schooling between the ages of 6 and 15 years instead. Alternatively, in certain circumstances, some parents may postpone school entry for their child until the age of 8.)
grundskolabetyg the grundskola leaving certificate, which is awarded at the end of a student's time in the grundskola. It is awarded when compulsory school has ended, or earlier if the student has satisfactorily completed his or her ninth school year. The grundskolabetyg contains details of the highest year the student has completed and the student's final grades in subjects, groups of subjects and optional courses. It is signed by the headteacher.

post-compulsory upper secondary school catering for students aged 16+ to 19/20.
Gymnasielärarexamen

degree which allowed teachers to teach at the upper secondary level. Replaced in 2001 by the new integrated teaching degree (Lärarexamen)

kompletterande skola (skolan/skolor) upper secondary school providing specialised courses, see 2.1.3.
Lärarexamen

degree awarded on sucessful completion of initial teacher training (on the new integrated teaching degree course).  Dependent on course length, the qualification is broadly equivalent either to a Bachelor's (first degree) or Master's (postgraduate) degree.

öppen förskola (förskolan/förskolor) open pre-school, that is, parent and toddler group, for children below school age

compulsory phase school for Sami-speaking children in the north of the country. (Sameskolan only cater for the first six years of compulsory education (students aged 7-13). The Sami population can also send their children to a mainstream grundskola or to a grundskola which provides integrated Sami education - language, culture, history.)

särskola
särskolan (definite form)särskolor (plural form)

 

compulsory phase special school for the mentally disabled. The särskola provides some form of education or training for even the most severely disabled students.
skolplan

school plan which each municipality is required to produce, setting out the general objectives for its schools, which have been adopted by the municipal council. Each municipality must state in its schools plan how it intends to attain national goals for the schools.
