Sweden : Initial Teacher Training

Last updated: 16-Aug-2007

Since the creation of the first elementary schools in Sweden in the 1840s, the State has been responsible for teacher training.  80

In 1977, all teacher training was integrated into higher education.  Prior to this, teacher training academies were often linked to the church and located in cathedral cities.  Reforms in the 1990s lead to the decentralisation of universities and university colleges, which meant new responsibilities but greater freedom for individual institutions. 83
