| Grade R | Reception grade for children aged 5/6. |
| Pre-Grade R | Term used to describe education provision from 0 to age 4/5. |
| Dinaledi schools | The Dinaledi project aims to increase participation and performance, especially of girls and disadvantaged learners, in mathematics and science. To achieve these aims, Dinaledi schools are provided with additional mathematics and science equipment and teachers and managers receive extra support and training. |

| Foundation phase | The first cycle of education covering children in Grade R to Grade 3, aged 5 to 9. |
