Users need to be conscious of the fact that the following description gives a general outline, but there are likely to be regional and institutional differences. This Archive provides information on the education system in the Republic of Korea (South Korea) only.

The term 'student' is used for registered pupils or students throughout all educational phases.

USERS SHOULD NOTE THAT THE TERMS USED TO DESCRIBE SPECIAL EDUCATIONAL NEEDS AND PROVISION IN THE COUNTRY CONCERNED ARE SPECIFIC TO THAT INDIVIDUAL COUNTRY.

Users should also note that, in January 2001, the Ministry of Education in Korea was restructured ad its scope expanded.  The Minister for Education was upgraded to the rank of Deputy Prime Minister, and the Ministry - now known as the Ministry of Education & Human Resources Development - is responsible for formulating and coordinating policies on education and human resources development.  The new Ministry's key aims will be foster citizens who are able to:

• meet the challenges of an information and knowledge based society; and
• be constructive members of the global community. ²⁰
