Glossary

Associate teacher Associate teacher status is conferred on those who have not attended teacher training institutions and who are employed on a temporary basis
Elementary school(s) Provides compulsory, state-funded education for 6- to 12-year-old students.
High school(s) Provides post-compulsory upper secondary education for students aged 15-18. High schools are classified into academic, vocational and other high schools - art and athletic, foreign language and science schools. (Students select the course they wish to follow.)
Junior college(s) Offers post high school technical and vocational courses, producing middle-level technicians.  Kindergarten/pre-school teachers generally train in junior college.
Junior high school(s) Provides three-year lower secondary education for students aged 12-15, also known as middle school. Junior high school education is compulsory and free (state-funded) in some areas of the Republic of Korea only.

Practicum(s) Teaching practice in schools.
Special school(s) Provides for students with severe special educational needs. (Only about a half of the country's children with severe special needs are enrolled in special schools; others are enrolled in special classes in normal schools; and the remainder receive integrated education in normal school classes.)
unified education The principle of educating students with special educational needs in mainstream schools.
