INCA Education around the world

Hungary : Introduction

Last updated: 12-Mar-2008

Although the Hungarian model of education does not fit easily into four phases, for the purposes of comparative analysis across the INCA website, the description in this country Archive is divided across four educational phases as follows:

  • Phase 1 describes pre-compulsory and kindergarten education.
  • Phases 2 and 3 are identical and describe compulsory primary and lower secondary education as usually provided in the general school (for ages 6-14).
  • Phase 4 describes the final years of secondary education.

The website description gives a general outline; there are likely to be regional and institutional differences.

The term 'student' is used for registered pupils or students throughout all educational phases.
