INCA Education around the world

Australia : Introduction

Last updated: 18-Sep-2008

Australia is a Commonwealth, which has devolved responsibility for education to the six States and two Territories. Consequently, it is not always possible to provide general statements about national provision. References to 'national' policies or programmes relate to joint initiatives between Commonwealth (Federal), State and Territory governments. Elsewhere, for the purposes of the INCA Archive, examples have been drawn from three States - Queensland, Tasmania and Victoria.

Information on the education systems in the other States and Territories in Australia is available from the following websites:

Australian Capital Territory Department of Education and Training - http://www.det.act.gov.au/

Department of Education and Training, Western Australia - http://www.eddept.wa.edu.au

New South Wales Department of Education and Training - https://www.det.nsw.edu.au

Northern Territory Department of Employment, Education and Training - http://www.education.nt.gov.au/

South Australia Department of Education and Children's Services - http://www.dete.sa.gov.au/

The following description gives a general outline, but there are likely to be significant regional and institutional differences. The term 'student' is used for registered pupils or students throughout all educational phases.
