6.1. First phase (pre-compulsory education, ages 0-5/6)

There is no formal policy on assessment in the (Pre-Grade R) birth-4/5 years phase. The draft birth-4/5 years curriculum proposes basic assessment methods that focus on observation and screening techniques. 32

Grade R assessment methods and approaches are stipulated in the National Curriculum Statement and the Assessment Policy. For information on Grade R assessment, see section 6.2

6.1.2 Purpose(s)

Assessment is used as a tool for learning and teaching. The continuous assessment approach makes it possible to use assessment results immediately to guide interventions required to ensure that learners attain the required competencies and learning outcomes. Results are also used for the purpose of progression in the phase.32
