State-funded education is normally provided for children identified as having special educational needs from the age of around 4 to the age of 18. However, all children with special educational needs do not have to attend school. There is, for example, a small scheme for home tuition, which provides education in the home for children whose medical condition or disability prevents them from attending school or from attending school regularly. This scheme also caters for severely physically disabled students with severe speech problems and who need additional help to operate computer equipment for the purpose of communication. A maximum of five hours per week home tuition has been allowed, but there are plans to extend the service where particular needs exist.5
Some hospital schools exist, in addition. These cater either for children who are temporarily hospitalised, or for those with longer-term problems who cannot attend school regularly.5
