4.4 Fourth phase: Upper secondary, age 16/17 - 18-20 [see 3.2.4]

4.4.1 Organisation of teaching groups

Performance in the lower secondary (known as the 'secondary') phase, student choice and school recommendation form the basis on which students are admitted to post-secondary courses. 22

4.4.2 Student progression through the phase

This phase is not divided into cycles. Continual and semestral assessment form the basis on which students progress through the different courses of study.22

4.4.3 Class size

The average number of students per teacher in secondary education in Singapore in 1991 was 21. In 2001, this figure was 20.  http://www.singstat.gov.sg/

The average class size at pre-university level is around 24.9

4.4.4 Teacher specialisation

Classes are taught by specialist teachers.22 Pre-university level teachers are trained to teach two subjects.18  Further information on initial teacher training for this phase is available in section 7.4.
